Purple Martin Houses
The largest of the North American swallows, the Purple Martin is a popular tenant of backyard birdhouses. Martins are beautiful, graceful, clean, interesting and beneficial birds. Purple Martins are medium-sized songbirds with a large head and thick chests. Male Purple Martins are entirely blueish-black, while females have a slightly dingy coloration. Their bubbling chirps and trills make them a much sought after bird, and they can even eat thousands of mosquitoes in one day!
Purple martins are best known for their communal nesting in apartment-like Purple Martin houses. The best way to attract purple martins is to put up a manmade purple martin house in your yard. Mount your martin houses 15 to 20 feet above ground, near a permanent source of water. Purple martins favor broad, open areas that offer good insect foraging opportunities. Ideally, you should place your martin house in the middle of a 40 to 50 foot square open area.
